Writing in Whangarei

Silver Birch

by Martin Porter

The divine spider
Could not have woven
A greater or more gracious web
In such searching style.

Your natural nobility
Enshrines the metallic patina
Peeling between unrivetted plates
Weeping a little plasma.

Against the steel grey sky
You shine in subtle vanity,
Roots touching veins
Of silver buried deep.
